***RESCHEDULED DATE*** Clinical Work with Sex Workers: An introduction and Foundation

CE Hours 3

About this live event

Historically sex workers have been ostracized, excluded, and/or directly harmed by most social institutions, in particular legal, academic, and clinical settings. Culturally we have not only discounted the work, but also the humans who do it, choose it, and thrive within it. In this intermediate-level workshop, we will expand our knowledge of sex work and its current sociocultural presence in our world. In addition to learning about sex work generally, we will explore current clinical strategies for treating those in the work. Just as multicultural and LGBTQIPA+ inclusivity has expanded our skills with specific populations, clinicians need specific skills and tools for treating sex workers ethically and equitably. We will explore treatment interventions drawn from liberation psychology approaches, calling professionals to enhance critical consciousness and challenge the impact of colonization, patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexism, and mononormativity in sex work. Unpacking those perspectives and internalized biases provides a foundation for expanding our clinical reach to those who have been traditionally left out of clinical care and dialogue.

Learning Objectives

  • 1. Analyze their internalized biases and perspectives specific to sex work and adopt new ways of conceptualizing sex workers as people and clients demonstrated by increased allyship in their local community over the next few months (identifying local sex work organizations, reaching out to offer services, donating to organizations).
  • 2. Design inclusive marketing strategies and gain at least 1 sex worker client and implement recommended treatment interventions for sex work clients within the next 6 months.
  • 3. Modify their approach to liberation/anti-oppression work to include sex work populations as identified clients. Describe the gaps in prior social justice and clinical work and make a plan to fill those gaps in their practice over the next 6 months.
