Black Men in Interracial Relationships: Historical Impact and Clinical Implications
Historically, African American men have endured centuries of trauma in various forms including racism, dehumanization, lynchings, beatings, and criminalization. Long considered a threat to white women and the social order, African American men who entered into intimate relationships with white women placed themselves, and potentially their communities, in potential peril. As such, African American men in interracial relationships bring unique challenges into the therapy room. This workshop will explore the historical impact on African American men and how these factors appear in the therapy room.
Attendees can expect a focus on the plethora of historical, social, psychological, and relational factors affecting African American men in interracial relationships as well as exploring the clinical implications of these type of relationships. This workshop will look at effects of colonialism, slavery, media, racism, intra-racial discrimination, racial identity development, internalized racism, fetishization, The Great Migration, mate selection, white supremacy, cultural norms, and stereotypes have impacted African American men in interracial relationships.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to identify the historical factors which impact African American men ininterracial relationships.
- Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to describe the individual and relational factors which positively and negatively influence African American men who are in interracial relationships.
- Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to explain the clinical implications of working with this population including examining their own biases & blind spots which could hinder effective therapy.
