Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to explain "erotic resilience" as applied to sex and relationship therapy.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the concept of "queering" in the therapeutic context.
  • Participants will be able to distinguish between "sexual identity" and "sexual subjectivity" as related to sexual self as process.
  • Participants will be able to describe how the application of Subject-Object Theory and increasing levels of complex consciousness (e.g., socialized mind, self-authoring mind, self-transforming mind) support a therapeutic model of developmental sexual complexity.

About the speaker

Carole Clements, MA, MFA

Carole Clements is Professor of Contemplative Psychology at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Dynamics of Intimate Relationships, Erotic Intelligence, Sexual Narratives, and Human Sexuality. Carole is also a mindfulness-based LGBTQIA+ inclusive sex and relationship therapist for monogamous and consensually non-monogamous individuals, partnerships and relationship constellations. Carole served as Dean of Naropa College for seven years, leading the faculty in a revision of the undergraduate core curriculum and assessment in subsequent years. Carole’s book Sex Positivity and White-sex Supremacy: Ending Complicity in Black Body Erasure will be published by Routledge in 2024 as part of a book series on Leading Conversations about Black Sexualities and Identities. As a scholar-activist-practitioner, Carole’s work centers on erotic justice, erotic resilience, developmental sexual complexity, the intersection of gender, sexuality and race (e.g., the impact of White Supremacy on discursive and performative sexuality), unsettling sexuality research, and queer spaces, places, and times (i.e., splacetime). Carole identifies as queer with a feminine aesthetic.
