Group Intervention for Trauma: Harnessing the Power of Community for Healing and Prevention
This workshop will build understanding and skill in group facilitation for communities healing from trauma. There is increasing awareness of both the heightened need for intervention and the strain that increased demand is placing on the mental health system. Traumatic experiences impact not just those directly involved, but the wider community in ways that create significant barriers to achieving collective health and wellbeing. These factors contribute to the fraying of communal networks in this time of overwhelming challenges.
Group interventions can provide a safe, accepting environment in which to share painful feelings and experiences, heal and build self-esteem. But perhaps even more importantly, they can serve to strengthen community networks and prevent greater psychological harm as mutual care is activated and community resilience is nurtured.
In this workshop, we will define trauma at the individual and communal level, learn the trauma-informed principles that guide group facilitation and consider how intervention can heal and promote community resilience.
