An important early stage in group development is what Brabender and Fallon term "Conflict and Rebellion" and Tuckman names "Storming". In this workshop, we will explore this phase of group development, seeking to understand the dynamics that emerge, some typical group behaviors that present challenges to the facilitators and the value of leaning into this stage to encourage the growth of the group. We will apply the psychodynamic and attachment-based concepts of rupture and repair to group life (e.g. Marmarosh, 2021). Ruptures--or breaks in empathy experienced by members in interaction with group leaders or other members are explored with an eye toward repair--or supportive exploration that leads to healing and growth.
