*New Date* Beyond Family Sculpting: The Benefits of Integrating Play into Your Work with Families

In the past few years, we have been overwhelmed with urgent messages that there is a child and youth mental health crisis, that there is a shortage of providers equipped to meet the needs of children, and that the “kids are not alright”. There is an urgent need to address this public health crisis that disproportionately affects children and families of color; those who identify as neurodiverse, LGBTQ, or disabled, and communities navigating economic instability, food insecurity, violence, and/or inaccessible healthcare. By bringing play and expressive techniques into therapy, clinicians can help enhance family communication, understanding, and emotional connection while reducing negative family interactions and behaviors.

Systemic therapists have been trained to involve all members of a family, however, for many the idea of including children in family therapy can feel daunting. Clinicians may worry that a child may cause disruption or be non-communicative in sessions, or that parents will question the validity of play or expressive-based techniques. (Lowenstein and Sprunk, 2010) Often children and adolescents are not developmentally able to or interested in talking about emotions, difficult topics, or their behavior in the ways that adults ask of them.

Including children in a developmentally appropriate way requires a paradigm shift from the “intellectual, cerebral, abstract world familiar to adults, to the world of imagination, spontaneity, metaphor, and creativity that is familiar to children.” (Bailey and Sori, 2000, p. 488). This training will provide you with the rationale for integrating play therapy techniques into your work with family systems. It will provide assessment tools and intervention ideas that you can use with minimal materials like learning the basics of how children communicate with toys and play and how to interpret those interactions. Learning Objectives

  • Participants will begin to develop a clinical framework and the rationale for integrating play into family therapy.
  • Participants will be able to describe the importance of play on child development, social skills, and emotional regulation.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of the role of metaphor in play and learn some of the basics around interpreting these metaphors.
  • Participants will obtain an understanding of how play activities can be used in assessing a family’s structure, strengths and needs.
  • Participants will learn several interventions that can be used with families immediately.
